OUR STORY

Inspire, Educate, And Empower

Founded by a passionate mechanical engineer, Science in Stilettos was born from the desire to challenge the misconceptions about women in male-dominated fields.

Our mission is to inspire, educate, and empower young girls and women to pursue their passion for STEM. We believe in creating a supportive community where femininity and technical prowess go hand in hand.

Our Founder

Science in Stilettos (SIS) was founded by Ruthie Sellers, a Black female mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in engineering and design. Her career began in technical drafting and product design, evolving into leadership roles across robotics, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and biomedical industries.

Her journey has been one of breaking barriers and defying expectations, fueled by a deep passion for engineering and a commitment to excellence.

The Birth Of Science In Stilettos

Throughout her career, she often found herself as one of the few women, and frequently the only black woman, in the room. These experiences highlighted the urgent need for more representation and support for all women in STEM.

Science in Stilettos was born out of this need, with a vision to create a space where young girls and women can see themselves reflected in the STEM community, feel encouraged to pursue their dreams, and understand that their femininity is not a hindrance but a strength.

Our Journey

From the very beginning, Science in Stilettos has been dedicated to shattering stereotypes and providing valuable resources and opportunities for women in STEM. We have grown into a vibrant community of mentors, educators, and learners who believe in the power of combining style and substance.

Our programs are designed to inspire confidence, foster innovation, and build a supportive network that spans across generations.

Why Representation Matters

Being a female and black engineer has given our founder unique insights into the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in STEM. Sharing her story and creating a platform for other women to share theirs can inspire countless others to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Representation matters, and seeing someone who looks like you succeed in a field can be the catalyst that turns a dream into reality.

Our Commitment

Science in Stilettos is more than an organization; it is a movement to redefine what it means to be a woman in STEM. We are committed to providing mentorship, educational content, and a supportive community that empowers women to thrive. Our vision is to see a world where women are equally represented and celebrated in STEM fields, and where every girl knows that she can be both smart and stylish.
